Ways to Save at the Florist

Welcome to Brides & Buttons, a blog for the DIY bride and brides on a budget!
Since it's May, I thought I'd do a post about flowers! (So original, I know.) But seriously, going to the florist can be quite daunting. I've compiled some tips and tricks to help you bring the cost of your wedding flowers down.

(Photos are not my own)

#1. Reuse your bridesmaids' bouquets as centerpieces
To me, this one makes so much sense. An average bridesmaid's bouquet costs around $60 and is only seen during the ceremony. Cut your costs in half by using the bouquets as centerpieces.

If you use a garland to decorate your ceremony arch, that can do double duty as well. Use the garland to decorate your sweethearts' table or the cake table.

#2. Use one big bloom
Sometimes, something simple makes more of a statement. Pick one big bloom for a knockout effect. Got your heart set on a big bouquet for yourself? Consider using this trick for your girls' bouquets instead, or for centerpieces.

#3. Use paper
Paper flowers are easy to make, inexpensive, and more durable. Plus, they make a unique and whimsical alternative to regular flowers. Check Pinterest for tutorials on different favorites, like peonies, hydrangeas, or roses.

Don't love the look of paper flowers? Add a few silk flowers into your bouquet or your decor to bring down the total overall cost without sacrifice the smell and look of real flowers.

#4. Think outside the box
There are so many beautiful ways to decorate a space, and flowers are just one of them. These lanterns make a cute substitute for costly flowers, and can be saved as a decorative memento. Some other ideas? A bouquet made of brooches, a backdrop made of ribbons, or a centerpiece from a stack of books.

#5. Know your seasons
Knowing what flowers are in season can save you big bucks. A single peony, for example, costs about $10 in June and $20 in January. (Keep in mind, prices and seasons may also vary slightly due to geographic location). I love the Seasonal Flower Guide on Green Wedding Shoes.

Know your look-a-likes too! A peony can range from $10-$20, but a similar-looking garden rose or cabbage rose will look the same and runs about $6 per stem, year-round. A good florist will work with you to find look-a-likes that are in your price range. Let your florist know you're open to suggestions.

Use filler flowers wisely! Some flowers just give you more bang for your buck! Hydrangeas make a bigger statement for less money by carrying more blooms per stem. Other inexpensive filler flowers can be gorgeous on their own too. I love baby's breath, dusty miller, and eucalyptus. Again, look for a florist who is willing to work with you to bring the cost down through fun and pretty substitutes!

I hope these suggestions help you as you're planning your wedding! It's your dream day, but that doesn't mean it has to cost a fortune.
